Dev't authority holds coop workshop
By Stephen Capillas

THE regional office of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) 10 held over the weekend a conference workshop on the status of cooperatives' external funding at the Balay Mindanao Center in Upper Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City.

In an interview, CDA 10 Director Orlando Ravanera said the activity is participated in by 50 cooperatives from all over Mindanao such as Davao, Surigao, Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon provinces.

Among those discussed were the identification of problems on various issues ranging from obtaining loans and provision of post harvest facilities.

Ravanera said the workshop also serves as a dialogue of sorts between their agency and the cooperatives in order to address their basic problems in securing loans and sustain their operations.

He said these cooperatives have been complaining about the difficulties of securing these loans from the national government financial institutions (GFIs), which have several pre-conditions and requirements set for the prospective applicants.

Also reportedly participating in the activity are GFI representatives like the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) and Quendancor.

The regional CDA 10 director cited anew the number of cooperatives that continue to operate in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental and how their numbers have declined over the years.

"For our part we are to bring the concerns of the cooperatives to the government's policymakers. What the cooperatives want is to be given a fighting chance (to achieve sustainability)," Ravanera told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
