In hosting the activity, Ravanera said there is a need for Filipinos to commit to a struggle for the expansion of participatory institutions and governance in order to secure a just, equitable and sustainable society.

"People's participation through cooperativism is the ultimate guarantee of justice and sustainability," he said.

In the Philippines, Mindanao has been among the priority areas of the European Union. Priority projects include those that involve economic cooperation, strengthening of civil society, democracy and human rights.

Development and rehabilitation, de-centralization, gender and health, environment and energy, higher education and research.

At the Information Session held last March 18 in Davao City, EC First Secretary Frank Hess said most proposals submitted by Mindanao-based organizations failed to meet the EC's requirements and were turned down.

During the May 12 2005 Cooperative Forum EC head of contracts and finance section Guy Platton leads a team to discuss available funding opportunities to include Asia Link, Small Projects Facility and Horizontal and Thematic Project Lines.

Beneficiaries are advised to take all necessary steps to publish the fact that the European Union has financed or co-financed the project.

With CDA as lead agency, other sponsors include the Cooperative Development Council of Cagayan de Oro (CDCC), the Provincial Cooperative Development Councils (PCDC), the Cooperative Insurance System of the Philippines (CISP), Coop Life Mutual Benefits Services/CLASP, Cooperative Bank of Misamis Oriental, MASS-SPECC Development Center, the Philippine Federation of Credit Cooperatives and the Center for Alternative Rural Technology (Cart).
