Wider telephone access sought By Judy Egar
A WIDER interconnection among telephone operators in the city is being sought at the City Council during its regular session on Monday.
Councilor Ian Acenas in his special report underscored the need for a broader access in all networks of telephone lines to accommodate the burgeoning telecommunications need of the business sector.
"The local telecom players, Misortel, Cruztelco, Philcom and Italtel among others, must renew their earlier endeavor of linking together their respective subscribers by adding additional trunklines to accommodate more inter-network calls," Acenas said.
Acenas noted that as per previous agreement among local telcos, 36 trunklines have only been made available. Thus, call traffic is congested when the number of callers exceeds the available trunklines.
The councilor emphasized the growing economic activity in the city as well as other parts of Misamis Oriental, requiring greater access to different telephone networks. This, Acenas said, will also encourage more subscribers and spur more economic advantages to the city.
To add to the comfort of telecommunications access, Acenas also proposed a single directory system similar to Cebu City.
"Lumping together the directory of all local telecommunication companies may be disadvantageous to some directory companies, but the benefit to the public can be rewarding in the long run," Acenas said.
The City Council is expected to deliberate the proposal by inviting the local telcos in a Committee hearing.(With reports from DVA)
