Korean Rotarian graces district meet By Danilo V. Adorador III
Make more friends than acquaintances.
This in essence, is one of the key messages of Rotary International President Representative PDG Dae-Jae Cho, here in the City of Golden Friendship to grace the 21st District Conference of District 3870.
By making more friends, PDG Cho emphasized that Rotary International has been vigorously able to carry out its humanitarian efforts, now entering its glorious 100 years.
As Rotary Community all over the world marks its centennial celebration, PDG Cho prods fellow Rotarians from the dynamic District 3870 to further expand its membership in propelling humanitarian projects for the greater good of the needy members of the society.
"More members means more projects for the community," PDG Cho said during the Thursday press conference at the sprawling Xavier Sports and Country club, the venue for this year's 3870 District Conference.
The District officers readily accepted this challenge. The peachy and brilliant Past Assistant Governor of 3870, Madame Rhia Rita Abalos, however suggested that Rotary International may consider lowering the membership fees of the organization. This way, Madam Abalos hopes to bring in more members to the organization. She however clarified that Rotary clubs within the district have community-based linkages where active partners work with the same noble intention sans direct membership to the organization. This will be another topic up for discussion with PDG Cho, the amiable Madame Abalos disclosed.
Rotary International is a worldwide organization with members numbering around 1.2 million in 166 countries. Rotary traces its early beginning in 1905, in a mining engineer's office in Chicago where Paul Harris, Silvester Schiele, Gustavos Loehr and Hiram Shorey gathered to form a service oriented organization. These four great mean never realized the impact of the organization they have started, later to become one of the pillars of human service.
Rotarians all over the world will converge in Chicago on June for its centennial celebrations.
In his message to District 3870 Rotarians, PDG Cho, who is accompanied by his charming wife, Eun-Ok Choi, underscores the demand to recognize the basic needs of poor communities and urge members to use the full weight of Rotary's 100 years of experience.
"Our decades of service have revealed to us the magnitude of human need in a world beset by natural disasters, frightening new diseases and brutal conflicts," PDG Cho's message reads.
The South Korean Rotarian, who is known for his generous contributions to Rotary's cause, also highlighted this Rotarian year as the Celebrate Rotary Year.
As such, PDG Cho invites District 3870 Rotarians to "celebrate the warm Rotarian fellowship that inspires our service and fuels our dedication."
One of the best way to celebrate Rotary, he said, will be to address those vast humanitarian needs and by putting Service Above Self.
Rotary International District 3870, headed by its vibrant leader, Governor Jose Nebrao, is composed of four zones each with respective member clubs spanning accross Northern and Central Mindanao. The District Conference is a meeting held annually in each district to further the program of Rotary through fellowship, good fun, inspirational addresses and the discussion of matters relating to the affairs of the clubs in the district and Rotary International.
