Mayor asks police to effect probe
REITERATING his call that all disputing officials of Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) be investigated, Mayor Vicente Emano said he relayed his position on the matter to Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Director Arturo Lomibao.
Director Lomibao visited Cagayan de Oro last Monday before proceeding to Marawi City where he honored the rescuers of the kidnap victims including the policeman killed in the firefight in last week's kidnapping in Piagapo, Lanao del Sur.
Emano said he conferred with Lomibao and asked the PNP chief to effect a fair and honest investigation on the involved policemen where all parties are heard.
While he supports the transfer of police to the local government, Emano clarified that the problem within the city police is "still a police matter."
"Dili ako gustong manghilabot ana kay sa polis man kana. Pero ingon nianing panahon nga dunay giatubang ang nasud nga hulga gikan sa mga terorista, kinahanglan magka-uyon ang mga polis kay sila ang manalipod sa publiko (I don't want to dip my fingers on it because it's police matter. But in these times that when the country is facing terrorists' threats, the police must come to terms with each other because they are our defenders)," Emano told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Emano earlier called for the inclusion of City Police Director Honorio Cervantes in the investigation ordered by Local Government Secretary Angelo Reyes.
This came as Superintendent Cervantes confirmed the transfer of three relieved Cocpo officials to Regional Police Office (RPO) 10 in Camp Alagar. "Police Chief Inspector Paciano Deloso, Police Senior Inspectors Jason Aguillon and Efren Camaro have been assigned to RPO-10," Cervantes told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Cervantes also dismissed the call for investigation against him, saying there is no basis for such investigation.
The row between him and three former operatives of the Special Operations Unit (SOU) have also been settled, Cervantes said.
"We are in good terms now, and I can see that they have been performing in the precincts where they are assigned," Cervantes said.
Earlier, the three SOU operatives accused Cervantes of illegally releasing a woman nabbed for illegal gambling activities.
Cervantes admitted releasing the woman "out of humanitarian reason." He said the policemen were just embittered after he relieved them from SOU.
The city police chief also said he is only waiting for the case slapped against him by the SOU operatives to progress.
"But I doubt it will progress. I am a Malacañang appointee so they have to complain to Malacañang," Cervantes said.
He maintained innocence on the charge saying releasing the said woman was within the bounds of law, invoking his authority as city police chief. (Danilo V. Adorador III)
