Political leaders irked over LP's Surigao meet

SIARGAO, Surigao del Norte -- The Liberal Party's (LP) staging of its Basic Orientation on Liberal Democracy (Bold), including the oath-taking of 300 new members of the coalition administration party, drew the ire of the local Lakas-NUCD party members in Surigao del Norte.
Surigao del Norte Vice Governor Rodolfo Navarro, provincial vice Chairman of Lakas-NUCD in Surigao del Norte, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro in a phone interview they are displeased by Senate President Franklin Drilon's move in recruiting new members to the Liberal Party without first consulting the coalition.
The Surigao del Norte Municipal Mayors's League headed by Tubod, Surigao del Norte Mayor Guillermo Romarate is planning to issue a resolution declaring Senate President Franklin Drilon persona non grata.
Navarro said they are now holding meetings with the mayor's league about the resolution adding that they believe Senator Drilon is "discourteous" when he came to Surigao del Norte unnoticed without even informing the Provincial Government about his presence.
Navarro said the mayors' league was also displeased with Senate President's pronouncements at the opening ceremonies of the Siargao Girls International Surfing Cup.
He said Drilon addressed former Surigao del Norte Governor Francisco T. Matugas as governor and future governor when in fact the present governor is Robert Lyndon Barbers.
Although former Lakas Senator Robert Zabala Barbers, Drilon's party mate, remained silent on the issue, Barbers's close political ally, Vice Governor Navarro, said the former Surigaonon senator is not happy with the recent development.
"Senator Barbers told me that it is not Drilon who can make Matugas and company win in the election anyway, kaya okay lang daw," Vice Governor Navarro said.
Drilon was with Representative Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino Jr., LP secretary general, Nerius Acosta of Bukidnon, Representative Dina Abad, wife of Department of Education Secretary Florencio Abad, who was also around as former Chairman of the Liberal Party and other LP officials.
Among Surigao del Norte officials who take oath as new LP members were, Pilar, Surigao del Norte Mayor Romeo "Micmic" Tesiorna, General Luna Mayor Cecilia Rusillon, Gigaquit, Surigao del Norte Mayor Elvira Egay and 15 other former Mayors of Surigao del Norte.
The 300 new LP recruits were coming from the different municipalities and barangays of Surigao del Norte.
Before the LP orientation seminar in Siargao, LP officials headed by Representative Noynoy Aquino Jr. conducted the same seminar for Butuan City, Agusan del Sur and Agusan del Norte new LP recruits in a hotel and convention center in Butuan City.
