A new lease of hope for surviving Stars By Lynde Salgados
* As veteran guards and new talents alike seek a place at CDO Stars
FORMER MBA playmaker Jaime Rivera is busy shedding off some pounds with Ballpals and fellow local cage standouts Andrew Neri and Paul "Shantao" Moreno are often seen now frequenting the oval of Pelaez Sports Center for stamina's sake.
In fact, big man Bobong Montemayor looked fit when he showed up recently at the open court, even running the full-court for a strong lay-up--to regular Ballpals guys' great surprise.
Is the forthcoming second regular season opening of the National Basketball Conference has something to do with it?
Whatever, youthful coach Andy Calingin declared the CDO Stars' two-day tryouts on February 25-26 (Saturday and Sunday 9 am) at the Acsat gym in Barangay Carmen is open to all aspiring basketeers in the region.
"For as long that you have the heart and courage to play competitive ball, the opportunity is wide-open for anyone to be a member of the CDO Stars," Calingin said.
He also made an assurance that NBC "Find of the Year" Julius Navales and most-sought-after forward Jayson "Boyet" Alfeche would still be wearing the CDO Stars jersey.
"Their retention is covered by the technical guidelines of the league that as a mother team we have the right of first refusal in case some other NBC teams would be interested to get their services. Gihimo kana para ma-protektahan ang mga local talents sa pirate-pirate," Calingin explained.
Already, Rivera has signified his intention to join tomorrow's tryout, even as local players from last year's lineup such as Jerome Numeran and Jingle "Baby Shaq" Jimenez have joined the team's practice Tuesday along with a handful of varsity graduates and collegiate mainstays.
"Given the break, it's an honor to play for the home ground squad in the NBC. It's a great feeling labi na kon modula `ta sa atong crowd," said Rivera, a brave warrior on the floor.
