Siargao's surf queen bags tilt By Ben Serrano Caraga correspondent
GENERAL LUNA, Siargao Island -- Siargao's queen of surfers Nildie Blancada bagged this year's first ever Siargao Girls International Surfing Summer Fest, besting seven other qualifiers, while British competitor Jerity Uigley backed out in the last minute in Wednesday's afternoon finals.
Contest organizer Olin Duaso told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that England's woman surfer Jerity Uigley backed out in the last minute after seeing big waves claiming she is not used to surf in big waves in her native England.
Tagged as "Queen of Siargao's surfing world", Neldie Blancada, due to homebreak advantage, bested eight other qualifiers for the finals beating even World Qualifying series competitor fellow Siargaonon Manette Alcala.
Alcala, ranked as among the 99 best professional surfers in the world accredited by the Association of Surfing Professional (ASP), has recently participated in the World Surfing Qualifying series in Australia last week of March.
Duaso said Blancada rode high with speed and agility along with Cloud 9's huge waves saying the 23-year-old woman surfer who is native of General Luna had a "homebreaker advantage" over the others.
Homebreaker advantage means complete mastery and familiarity of the waves of the surf area.
Blancada bagged the top prize of P50,000 while 1st runner up Daisy Valdez of La Union went home P25,000 richer.
Second runner up is Mheky Galang--another professional surfer from La Union who bagged the P15,000 prize money and 3rd runner up went to Manette Alcala of General Luna.
Fourth runner up is Mocha Edusma of Daet, Camarines Norte and Marie Aquiino from La Union is the fifth runner up.
This year's organizer is the Philippine Surfing Federation (PSF) chaired by Surigao del Sur Representative Prospero Pichay Jr. and co-chaired by former Surigao del Norte Governor, Attorney Francisco Matugas.
Upcoming inetrnational surfing event also to be held here in Cloud 9, General Luna is schedule on September this year.
