Transport group okay with fare rate delay
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

ONE of the largest transportation groups welcomed the order to stay the additional P1.00 minimum fare rate hike until next month as recently issued by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).

In an interview with Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro, Transportation Federation of Cagayan de Oro (Trafeco) chairman Virgilio Valmoria said they welcome the move as the recent fare rates approved by LTFRB Secretary Elena Bautista was "unfair and without basis."

He said it was their regional leaders who had a hand on the putting on hold of the new fare rates.

Valmoria said the Transportation Summit in Manila was only attended by those in Manila and Luzon areas but did not include representatives from the other provinces.

He said the stay in fare rate hike is the result of the request of the regional leaders.

He cited how the additional P1.25 for each succeeding kilometer was only good for Manila and some other areas but not in other provinces.

Earlier, drivers complained how Manila PUJs were granted P2.00 additional increase for their minimum rates while those in Region 10 were only granted P1.00.

They said this is very unfair considering that diesel prices in Region 10 and other the provinces outside of Luzon are pegged at a higher rate than that in Manila.

Meanwhile, LTFRB-10 regional director Mandangan Darimbang confirmed in a separate interview that indeed there was a recent order to stay the implementation of the new fare rates nationwide.

He said this as some groups filed a motion for reconsideration at their head office at Manila and that LTFRB has to take in the recent P0.75/liter rollback doled out by oil companies.

"The motion for reconsideration will be decided this June 16...until then fare rates will be still the same," he said.
