White dethrones Diaz and company By Lynde Salgados
NANNI Palacio was tired and sick of a runner-up finish in the last two years.
And so a hurting Bobong Paasa who bucked a swollen foot to help White's elusive quest for the title.
With key mates Baloy Fernandez, Walag, Nonoy Turno, Francis Poblacion, Jojo Batobalonos and Jojo Udasco, among others, arriving on time at the venue with the same flaming desire, White was finally vindicated upending the Bobby Diaz-led Red's dominance with a 79-71 victory on a drizzly Sunday afternoon at Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center.
"Nakahinuktok gyod ko sa wala pa nagsugod ang dula kay grabe ikatulo na ka tuig karon unya siyaro'g ma-second lang gihapon `mi," beamed Palacio in celebrating his first taste of glory in what billed as the First Conference action of the 2005 Ballpals Inter-Color tourney.
White's balanced efforts on both ends of the floor spell doom to Red's own bid of building a dynasty in the Ballpals cagefest, even as Turno and company attributed their rivals' downfall to seven-straight miscues of the usually hot Diaz at the three-point range.
"Pero dili gyod kaayo siya makaporma adtong tungora sa tres kay hugot atong
depensa," said Turno over a plentiful bottles of icy cold beers.
Fernandez, Walag and Turno produced 13, 11 and 10 points each, though it was truly a team effort with all of White cagers contributing a number or two for the victory.
"Ila gyod `to nga dula kay si Jetmark (Mercado) lang mi-surrender na nga wala pa nahuman ang dula," said tournament overseer Crisanto Yurong who refrained from naming an MVP in the first conference.
"Nag-experiment pa lang `ta sa first conference. Dawbi successful man so, ituloy-tuloy na nato `ni karong July," Yurong told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
