Ozamis duels CDO Stars on Sunday in Gingoog

* Nicdao, Vilar named NBC players of the month

OZAMIS Cotta, the only unbeaten squad in the NBC league with a 5-0 record, will play against the CDO Stars on June 12 (Sunday 6 pm) in Gingoog city.

A presentation by the National Basketball Conference in cooperation with the city government of Gingoog, admission fee to the Ozamis-CDO showdown is pegged at P40.

"We'll try our very best to give Ozamis a good fight," said team manager Andy Calingin whose CDO Stars being mentored by former PBA coach Arlene Rodriguez is toting a 1-2 win-loss card in the NBC's Southern Conference.

One of the reasons why the Ozamiz Cotta is on top of the southern conference going into their match against the CDO Stars this Sunday is the renaissance of the 6-foot-5 veteran slotman Christian Nicdao.

Nicdao, who played for Mobiline in the PBA and the Laguna Spring last season, is averaging 13 points, 8.80 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1 steal, a league-best 3 blocks, while shooting 42% from the field in the five wins of Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog's Cotta Shrine team.

Nicdao was at his best when he led Ozamiz to a pulsating 77-74 debut win over the Valencia Golden Harvest (2-2) last May 1. Aside from drilling the winning putback, Nicdao had a monster game of 15 points and season-high 22 boards on top of four blocks, four steals and an assist in a foul-plagued 29 minutes of action.

He is fast becoming Ozamiz's anchor of their inside game. His strong showing in the ongoing 2005 Panasonic-NBC national championship earned him the Player of the Month honors for the southern conference in the month of May.

In the northern conference, the sweet-shooting forward Leo Vilar of Forward Taguig (3-1) has finally come out of his shell.

Flourishing in Danny Gavieres' system, the second-year forward had averaged a team-best 17 points, 5.67 rebounds, one assist, two steals and 1.33 blocks per game. The 6-foot-3 forward, who is best remembered for shooting a perfect five-for-five from the three-point area against the CDO Stars last season, has been consistent dropping 22 against Laguna Spring (1-3), 10 and 19 in their wins over the Parañaque Jets (2-2) and Cavite Insurers (2-3) respectively. He was limited to only six points in their 86-70 loss to the RP-Training Team (2-0).

Vilar bested Rollie Basilides, Niño Marrquez of the Jets for the northern conference's Player of the Month honors.

Games in the tournament sponsored by Panasonic, Sulpicio Lines, Cebu Pacific, Philtranco, Accel, Molten, Sunbolt, Nature's Spring, Far Eastern Insurance, Spring Cooking Oil, Skygo Motorcycles, Sirlitz Solutions Provider, Hapee Toothpaste, Dewfoam Industries, Ping Ping Lechon, Rough Rider Jeans, partner-hotels Bayview Park and Holiday Plaza-Cebu are aired over the government-owned National Broadcasting Network (NBN) every Sunday at 4pm, and on Prime Channel at 2pm and 8:30 pm daily.
