Mantawi beats Valencia City

MANDAUE CITY -- The Hapee/Dewfoam-backed Mantawi Sparkling Nights sparkled in their debut as they escaped with a come-from-behind 82-79 overtime win Sunday night against the Valencia Golden Harvest in the 2005 Panasonic-NBC national championship at the Cultural and Sports Center here.

Ardy Larong and Ronald Capati had monster double-doubles even as Aries Gloria exploded in the perimeter to overhaul a 66-52 deficit at the onset of the fourth quarter.

Capati's jumper gave the Sparkling Nights a 73-70 cushion going into the final two minutes of the regulation. Valencia's Jester Adams made a lay-up while Dino Cabili split his free throws in the last 37.6 seconds to send the game into overtime.

Larong and Capati ignited a 6-2 run to open the extra period and put Mantawi ahead, 79-75. Golden Harvest forward Eliazar Berami's free throws tied the game for the last time, 38.7 seconds left.

Gloria eluded Adams for a jumper off the glass while Maui Huelar had a defensive gem in the ensuing play to deal the Golden Harvest of Mayor Jose Galario Jr. to its second straight setback, its fourth in six games.

"I give credit to the boys' determination. They never gave up," Mantawi coach Jun Noel said.

Noel, who steered the Negros Slashers to the championship in the defunct MBA, added that Reed Juntilla was not able to suit up as his contract is still under negotiation with his PBL team Montaña.

Capati finished with a game-high 23 points, 12 rebounds, an assist, two steals and two blocks in 39 minutes of action. Larong supported him with 14 markers on top of 14 boards and five assists while Gloria made 15 points on a 7-of-11 shooting.

Valencia will wind up its Visayas trip against the Iloilo Warriors of Iloilo Basketball League president Robert Uy and supported by Governor Niel Tupas 6pm Tuesday at the University of San Agustin Gym.

The Zanorte Hornbills of Governor Rolando Yebes and supported by Dapitan Mayor Dominador Jalosjos, Jr. and Dipolog Mayor Roberto Uy will begin its northern swing at the San Dionisio Gym Tuesday against Vice Mayor Anjo Yllana's Parañaque Jets.
