8 perish in road mishap
BUTUAN CITY -- Eight people were killed when a six-wheeler cargo truck collided head on with a passenger tricycle fully loaded with eight passengers along the National Highway in Purok 6, Barangay Villa Kanangga Friday morning.
Three passengers died on the spot while the five others died later at the different local hospitals here, the police here claimed.
Police said, the cargo truck driver, William Dalapo was drunk after having a drinking spree early Friday morning at the Go Thong warehouse at the time of the accident.
The incident took place in time of the visit of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, the capital town of Agusan del Sur where the Chief Executive spearheaded turn over of school chairs made out of confiscated logs to beneficiary schools in the province.
Police identified the dead victims as Richard Alejandre, 30, motorcycle driver of Upper Mandakpan, Butuan City, Rachel Avancia, 15, high school student of Agusan National High School, Roden Quiver, 53, Quirino Fernandez, a resident of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte, Cristina Racaza, 60, Reynaldo Acedo and Aida Madamba.
Police said the cargo truck bearing plate number KEC 382 was coming from nearby Carlos Go Thong Shipping Lines warehouse front radio station DXBC disembarking cargoes that when it was heading towards Barangay Villa Kanangga, it rammed into the fences of at least three houses alongside the road.
When it avoided other houses alongside the road, it bumped into the motorcycle running in the opposite direction towards Butuan City fully loaded with passengers where three of them died on the spot because of heavy injuries including the driver of the motorcycle.
Police have filed "reckless imprudence which lead to multiple murder" against the cargo truck driver identified as William Dalapo, a resident of Butuan City.
Religious groups and concerned citizens here called on police to monitor and strictly implement the ban on drunk drivers to drive by commenting that traffic policemen are allegedly good only in extorting motorists and not in implementing laws. (Ben Serrano)
