Tolentino still makes it to '05 Milo race finals By Lynde Salgados
THE good news is participants of the Cagayan de Oro leg Milo Marathon eliminations exceeded the 10,180 quota of entries this year.
The bad news is homeground pride and three-time leg winner Aileen Tolentino was dislodged by veteran foe Helen Tacling, 29, in the premier 21K category for female runners.
Still, Tolentino's second-place finish in the 29th National Milo Marathon here on Sunday at Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center was enough to secure her a slot in the National Finals set to be slated on October 9 in Metro Manila.
"It only proved nga sa lumba sa dagan, makalahutay gihapon ang edaran basta praktisado lang ug disiplinado," said local Milo Marathon media coordinator Uriel Quilinguing, noting that Tolentino is only 22 years old or seven years younger than Tacling of Lantapan, Bukidnon. Tacling finished just third last year in the Northern Mindanao eliminations being won by Tolentino.
Cecile Topia of Pagadian placed third to also make it to the national finals cut.
Tangub city sensation Arnold Unabia also upstaged defending champion Juniel Languido in the 21K men's bracket that saw Bukidnon bet Roger Sawin-ay finishing third.
Unabia's title win had eventually created a stir since it was just his first time to see action in the qualifying 21K race.
Lala Mansawi and Jennielyn Grace Topia ruled the male and female 5k fun run, while the kiddies 3K race was dominated by Joshua Abolanda and Jaime Tacling in the 6-9 age category and Earth Alberio and Richie Dala in the 10-12 group.
