Ozamis tops NBC south con field
OZAMIS CITY -- The Ozamis Cotta virtually sealed the top spot in the southern conference as they improved to 9-2 following an impressive 83-67 romp over the SMB Tours/Viacom Cable-backed Baguio Lions Saturday in the 2005 Panasonic-NBC national championship at the Governor Angel Medina, Sr. gym.
Dennis Cabigkis led a balance scoring attack of the Cotta Shrine team of Mayor Reynaldo Parojinog with 16 points while Rulof Liangco and Melfred Sampilo added 14 and 13, respectively.
Ozamiz jumped the gun early opening a 27-11 lead in the first quarter.
The lead ballooned to 23, 38-15, early in the second canto before Melvin Fontanilla waxed hot for 15 of his game-high 17 points in a Baguio 20-6 run to cut the deficit to just nine, 44-35 at the break.
The Lions of Vice Mayor Reinaldo Bautista, Jr. continued their surge in the opening minutes of the second half as they came within five, 46-41, but Ozamiz woke up just in time as they held to a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
Baguio fell to 2-6 in the tournament supported by Panasonic, Sulpicio Lines, Sunbolt Sports Drink, Spring Cooking Oil, Accel, Molten, Nature's Spring, Far Eastern Insurance, Skygo Motorcycles, Sirlitz Solutions Provider, Hapee Toothpaste, Dewfoam, KSK Food Products (Boy Bawang), Bayview Park Hotel and Holiday Plaza-Cebu.
In the other game, the Paranaque Jets snapped Bacchus/Harbour Centre-Manila's two-game run, 84-76, at the San Juan Gym.
Coming off its 90-104 loss to Mantawi, the KSK Food Products (Boy Bawang)-backed Jets of Vice Mayor and actor/TV host Anjo Yllana wound up the classification round at 6-7 behind third-running Laguna Spring.
Larry Rodriguez held his own against Manila's big men, finishing with 19 points and hauled 11 rebounds, while Randy Lopez chipped in 13 points, nine rebounds and dished out two assists.
Nani Epondulan was his usual fiery self for the Bacchus/Harbour Centre five but his 23-point output went for naught as he failed to get the needed back-up from his teammates dropping Bacchus/Harbour Centre to 2-5.
Ozamiz will not finish below 9-4 and should either defending champion Tribu Sugbu or the Hapee/Dewfoam-backed Mantawi Sparkling Nights, who both hold 7-4 cards, catch them up, the Cotta Shrine team will still get the top seed in the play-offs as they beat their two Cebuano rivals earlier this season.
Baguio will meet cellar-dweller Zanorte Hornbills 6pm today at the Teachers' Gym in Dipolog City.
The Iligan Crusaders and Valencia Golden Harvest follows with similar 6-5 records with CdO Stars (3-4), Iloilo Warriors (3-7) and the Zanorte Hornbills (1-9) trailing them in the southern conference.
The Forward Taguig continue to lead the northern conference with 6-2 card followed by Cavite Insurers (7-5), Laguna Spring (7-6), Parañaque (6-7), Bacchus/Harbour Centre (2-5) and Baguio (2-6).
