Original Bisaya musical theater rocks Oro fiesta

"GUERRILLA!," an original alternative rock musical theatre extravaganza conceived by writer-director Mozart Pastrano and composer-musical director Ric Raņises, will be staged at the City Amphitheater in Divisoria on the eve of the city fiesta, August 28.

It is part of the exciting series of cultural events produced for the city government by the Fiesta Cultural Sub-Committee headed by Honorable Anthony O. Brellita.

The one hour-and-a-half musical is based on the true story of a 13-year-old girl in Mindanao who became a child warrior in the insurgency movement.

"But we focus on the human story, not the politics or the military angles," says Pastrano, artistic director of Pasundayag Theatre Company, the resident cultural arm of Promote Cagayan de Oro Foundation, Inc.

"It is our plea for peace in Mindanao, using the language of today's youth--contemporary music, and in Binisaya at that."

The musical is Pasundayag's entry to this year's National Theater Festival organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

"Guerrilla!" topbills Agnes Lumbay in the lead role, together with Princess and Turbo Bautista--siblings of the popular singer from Cagayan de Oro, Mark Bautista, a member of Pasundayag Theatre Company.

"In fact, the male part was originally Mark's," reveals Raņises, bandleader and vocalist of the leading Cagayan de Oro band, Tabularaza.

Denise Aguilar, production manager of Pasundayag, makes a guest appearance in a plaintive solo composed by Robert Alico.

Accompanying the cast onstage is D Next Band composed of Adrian Dal, drums; Mark Dal, guitar; Carlo Figuracion and Baylon Butardo, keyboards; and Jonah Aren Booc, bass.

Lighting design is by Dexter Jumalon, who also serves as technical director, while production design is by Ignacio Naganga. The show is open to the public free of charge.
