Red rolls to 2nd win; Yellow bounces back By Lynde Salgados
* Ugly cut, missing bag mar Yellow's thrilling victory
PERENNIAL MVP Bobby Diaz exploded for 32 points and Red notched its second-straight victory at the expense of White, which faltered, 79-87 despite the presence of NBC player Jaime Rivera.
Making true of their promise, opening round casualty Yellow-Camel Filter bounced back Tuesday, handing Blue of its second defeat, 63-57 in the 2nd Conference action of the 2005 Ballpals Inter-Color tourney here at Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center.
Yellow's nerve-wracking finish was marred, however, by a twin misfortunes that struck its two reliable starters.
Jerez Abacahin took an early exit with blood dripping down his face after he was accidentally hit by a wayward elbow of a soaring Crisanto Yurong.
"Aksidente gyod kay wala man sab niya matuyo," said Abacahin who suffered an ugly cut at his forehead. He contributed 10 points with barely 4 minutes left in the first quarter. And right after pouring in 12 points to top Yellow's scorers, Tata Lucido had a shock of his life after learning that his bag containing his personal belongings was missing.
"Importante ang mga sulod adto pero bisa'g kadtong akong ID (Identification Card) sa trabaho lang ang mabalik okey na sa ako," was his appeal to hairy hands operating at the sports center.
Rivera and Baloy Fernandez knocked in 27 and 13 points for White. But the tandem of Diaz and Jay Rafisura proved to be more effective as the latter gracefully responded with 19 markers.
"Simple basketball lang among gibuhat. Bahala'g dili mi makaiskor nga mga back-up basta kon asa ang open didto paingon ang bola," said Red's Bonggiks Kikoy.
Yellow posted a double-digit lead in the first three quarters. But a determined Blue buckle down to work to move within 5 points in the killer stretch with perimeter specialist Angking Saura, Yurong, Edz Baculio, JP Pabillore and veteran point guard Anton Pabillore blending well on the offensive end.
But big baskets from workhorse Boyet Burias and a well-rested Braden Abacahin plus the defensive wall of Chico Maravilla doused cold water on Blue's searing comeback.
"We played as a team for this victory. Medyo subo lang kay napaksi-an si Jerez unya nakawatan si Tata," Ferdie Roa said.
