Culture nights in Oro fiesta
By Mozart Pastrano

FINALLY, culture took center stage during the recent Cagayan de Oro fiesta!

Every night during the final run-up to the city fiesta on August 28, the Feast of St. Augustine, the city came alive with music, theatre, dance, and other performances.

"This is all about community engagement through cultural interactions," declared Honorable Anthony Brellita, chair of the City Fiesta Celebrations-Cultural Sub-Committee.

Choral groups, community rondallas, show bands, school and community theatres and dance troupes, even a kulintangan ensemble, and community leaders-turned-fashion models heated up the fiesta nights with shows galore under the theme "Panaghiusa ug pakigdait: Cagay-anong bahandi sa kaugmaon (Unity and camaraderie: a treasure trove for Cagay-anons in the future)."

On Aug. 24 and 26, a cultural revue unfolded showcasing Filipino songs and dances.

This was participated in by schools (Liceo de Cagayan University, Xavier University, and Capitol University), government agencies, and various cultural communities.

On Aug. 27, an invitational gala was held at the stylish atrium of Mindanao's first mall, the Limketkai.

Regional directors of national government agencies, executives, top businessmen, and local officials headed by Mayor Vicente Y. Emano walked down the runway as models wearing Filipino attire--a major event featuring the city's name-droppables.

The highlight of the evening was the awarding of Outstanding Cagay-anons led by Dr. Rafaelita Pelaez-Golez, president of Liceo U, who shimmered in an elegant cerulean Filipiniana outfit.

On the eve of the city fiesta on Aug. 28, Cagayan de Oro's Pasundayag Theatre Company presented "Guerrilla!" This alternative rock musical theatre extravaganza told the true story of a 13-year-old Mindanao girl who became a child warrior in the insurgency movement.

"It's our contribution to the ongoing search for pathways to peace in our country," Honorable Brellita said.
