Coalition warns vs army adventurism
By Ryan Rosauro

OZAMIZ CITY--The lead convenor of the Bukluran Para sa Katotohanan (Coalition for Truth), a coalition formed as an aftermath of the House vote junking the impeachment complaints against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, warned of military adventurism in the face of the current political crisis.

Speaking before some 2,000 students of the Immaculate Conception College-La Salle here, Bro. Armin Luistro, President of the De La Salle University System, said the longer Arroyo stays in office the more imminent the threat of a military takeover in government.

Luistro is credited for joining together the fragmented opposition forces that calls for the resignation of Arroyo through the Bukluran.

He explained that the threat of military adventurism is not coming from generals of the Armed Forces whom he said enjoyed extravagant and luxurious lifestyles, but rather from junior officers who are exposed to the grave dangers in the field.

The junior officers, he continued, are disgruntled at the unjust arrangement within the Armed Forces, a situation that is seemingly overlooked by the Arroyo, who is the Commander-In-Chief.

Capitalizing on these pent-up feelings about the system, the young officers can decide to venture into politics and take advantage of the political crisis to catapult them into power, Luistro warned.

He said the most viable way to diffuse this evolving situation is for Arroyo to step down from office or risk being overthrown and replaced by a military junta.

With Arroyo's resignation that would lead to an easing of the political tension, the situation fuelling military adventurism is removed, he said.

Earlier, Senator Rodolfo Biazon warned Malacañang not to underestimate the threat disgruntled junior officers in the Armed Forces would play into the political crisis.
