Council to look into ammo dumpsite
WARY on the recent Taguig explosion, the City Council would look into the possible danger posed by the ammunition depot owned by the Philippine Air Force (PAF) located at Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro City.
In her report during the City Council session Monday, Councilor Maryanne Enteria disclosed that residents near the facility have expressed fears that the Taguig incident, in which over 100 people were injured when an ammunition dump exploded, might happen again in their vicinity.
She said Barangay Lumbia Chairman Allan Vergara confirmed the presence of the said ammunition facility.
The Taguig explosion two weeks ago has triggered growing concerns on the safety of the country's ammunition dumps.
The explosion, police said, could have been due to lightning or a chemical reaction in the explosives.
Councilor Enteria said the Air Force might have in its ammunition stockpile unused bombs that might set off anytime "for varying reasons."
She said the City Council in a closed door meeting with Airforce authorities would determine whether the said depot is still operational or had been converted into an ammunition dump.
"We would also like to know what type of security measures are in place to secure that these ammunitions would not wreak havoc in the nearby residential area," she said. (Danilo V. Adorador III with reports from Sunnex)
