Iligan officials pledge loyalty to Arroyo

ILIGAN CITY -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo arrived here amid very warm treatment from local political leaders, heavily underlining her being a "kababayan" owing to her spending her childhood vacations in Barangay Buruun.

This reception belies their rejection of her presidential bid in 2004 during which she lost heavily to actor Fernando Poe Jr. here.

Then local Poe backer and now Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz, a godson of the president, has already pledged political allegiance to Arroyo.

In a manifesto, the city's barangay officials declared their support for the administration and leadership of Arroyo.

They said that the accusations lodged against her of rigging the 2004 polls are merely pent up charges, insisting that she squarely won the elections.

Nevertheless, they lauded her for still holding the nation together in times of crisis.

They added that a protracted political crisis would only push the country into the economic abyss.

Arroyo was here to speak before the conferment ceremony for "The Outstanding Iliganon (Toil) Award" in observance of the city's 55th founding anniversary.

The award, of which she was a recipient in 1998, is conferred on residents who have made significant contributions to the advancement of ones field and contributed to the locality's prestige and honor.

After her speech, the president paid a short visit to the St. Michael Church whose feast is to be celebrated on Thursday.

Earlier, Arroyo attended the unveiling of a National Historical Institute marker at the Macapagal-Macaraeg House in Barangay Timoga, which is declared as a national heritage site.

She also inducted officers of the Iligan chapter of Karancho, a group of civilian traffic law enforcement volunteers.
