NM Mercado places 2nd in Iligan tilt By Lynde Salgados
NATIONAL Master Levi Mercado of Cagayan de Oro defeated home ground bet NM Fernandito Pialan in the 9th and final round to place second behind eventual champion NM Ernesto Fernandez of Pagadian in the 2005 Iligan Fiesta Open chess tournament, which was concluded on Friday.
Mercado may have won the championship on a "victory" by Oro compatriot Johnnel Balquin in the final round.
But Fernandez, who had the disadvantage of handling the black pieces, proved too much for the upset-conscious Balquin in their slambang encounter.
"Gawas nga puti iyang piyesa, pride sab ni Balquin nga makig go or bust kang Fernandez. Unfortunately, he was the one who cracked under pressure," Mercado said.
Rounding up the top-10 finishers of the cash-rich Iligan chessfest are NM Mirabaeu Maga of Manila, NM Roger Verganio of Misamis Oriental, NM Sarip of Cotabato, Jezrel Lopez of Aurora, Zambo Sur, J. Lopez, NM Nouri, Balquin, Escora and Victor Lluch.
Meanwhile, arbiter Jun Cuizon said 10 more entries from Iligan have registered for the Cagayan de Oro Shell chess tourney on Oct. 1-2 at the Limketkai Mall.
The keenly awaited event for 14-under and 20-below players will accept only 500 participants on a first come, first served basis.
With only P50 entry fee, each contestant will be given free McDonald lunch on the opening day, free better Shell chess t-shirt and special certificate apart from the whopping cash prizes awaiting the winners.
Goldcrest Marketing along Cruz Taal-Pabayo sts in Divisoria is designated as the official registration site for the Shell event. Interested parties may look for NM Roly Tan at second floor of Goldcrest building for the entry forms.
