'Miss Int'l won through sheer luck'
By Lino dela Cruz
Iligan correspondent

ILIGAN CITY -- As the whole nation rejoices over the success of Precious Lara Quigaman in winning the 2005 Miss International, a former beauty queen says that more than anything else, it was a lot of luck that did it.

Ms. Gloria Diaz, a former Miss Universe title holder who is here as one of judges of the annual "Search for Miss Iligan", said she is very happy for Precious Lara Quigaman, for making it and besting 50 other beauties from different countries in the 2005 Miss International, held in Tokyo, Japan last September 26, this year.

"I am very happy for her and our country and her winning and becoming an ambassador of goodwill as part of her duties as Miss International, helps the country," Diaz said.

Apart from the tedious preparations, beauty and brains, "A lot of luck... more luck than anything else did it for Precious," said Diaz.

Diaz, who is known to have answered wittily during her time when she competed in the Miss Universe contest where she won, pretended she could not remember what the question was. "Those who are in their 50's may have remembered that question," Diaz said.

A female journalist volunteered and threw the question at Ms. Diaz. "What would you do if (astronaut) Neil Armstrong comes down from the moon and lands in your frontyard?"

But Diaz still refused to remember her answer and the same female journalist answered for her, which said something like... "I would treat him (Armstrong) like any other man."

Quigaman's success is in addition to the other Filipinos who have excelled in their field of endeavors and brought glory to the Philippines like world champion boxers Manny Pacquiao, Brian Viloria and Rey Bautista.

"I wish us all that we will get somewhere, parang tayo na ang nahuli (It looks that we are being left behind)," she said.
