Construction industry leads in accidents in region
By Danilo V. Adorador III

THE construction industry is the most accident-prone workplace in Region 10, revealed by a data from Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC).

Work-related accidents, which include slips and falls from heights, topped the list among the work hazards in the region, the (OSHC) report said.

OSHC pointed out that the accidents could be related to the construction boom experienced by Region 10 in the 2nd quarter of 2004, "as evidence by the increase in the number of approved building permits issued in the area".

"These permits revolve around new constructions and additions, alterations and repairs of residential and nonresidential buildings and other structures undertaken in the region," the report disclosed.

In a series of workplace inspections last year, Labor Inspectors in the region reported that majority of employers here failed to comply with standard occupational regulations that ensure employee protection against work hazards.

"Violations include no established safety committee in the company and failure for the employees to wear personal protective equipments (PPE)," OSHC reported.

Moreover, Labor Inspectors also observed that for many establishments, compliance is only in paper and not on factual facts.

The number of violators could be higher, the report noted, as the undermanned 12 Labor Inspectors covering the Northern Mindanao area was only able to inspect 199 establishments out of the 930 workplaces for 2004.

Employers pointed to the lack of funds as reason on their non-compliance with upgrading of their PPEs, which include masks, safety shoes, hard hats and other safety gears.

For its part the ALU-TUCP labor group, in one of the meetings with OSHC suggested for "more detailed information on occupational safety and health," to protect themselves from work related illnesses and accidents.
