1 dead, others hurt in freak bus accident

ONE died while several others were seriously injured when a Rural Transit Mindanao (RTMI) bus figured in a freak accident at Barangay Lumbo, Alubijid town in Misamis Oriental at 7:00 a.m. Friday.

According to Naawan town Mayor Dennis Roa, the RTMI bus came from Zamboanga City and was headed to Cagayan de Oro when its front side blew up causing it to turn turtle and slam into a passenger jeepney and a privately owned multi-cab vehicle.

Initial reports showed that an RTMI employee named Homer Jabagat died in the accident. A Laguindingan councilor Dondon Salcedo said the bus was driving on top speed when its front side exploded.

Around 11 persons were brought to the Polymedic General Hospital in this city. The drivers of the multi-cab and jeepneys managed to get out of the way when the bus collided with their vehicles.

Wounded were 29-year-old Manuel Lalim; 54-year-old Margarita Magallanes of Manticao town; Jimbo Acain; Claudio Alabansa; Arlene Maliksi of Kolambogan town in Lanao del Norte; Jason Magallanes; Catalina Larque; Madeline Magallanes; and Virgie Sabandal together with two of her children named Ralph and Charles of Barangay Nazareth this city.

The victims sustained various head and body injuries but were not in critical condition.

The other victims brought to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) were Sheryl Bayron; Mary Ann Rapal of Pangayan, Gitagum town in Misamis Oriental; Ogie Donque; Generogi Lusdoc; Eladio Daluya; Saturnino Ampo; Charlie Saloma; Charlie Radara Tagubar; Gina Cimene; Geodelyn Goma; Lea Suarez; Gal Garello; Virgilio Mertalia of Initao town in Misamis Oriental and a certain Rico Lero together with his wife Gemma and two of their children.

One of the victims a certain Aquino was scheduled to enlist in the military when the incident occurred. Later Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno said in a dxIF Bombo Radyo interview that the area had been known as a frequent place for vehicular accidents.

"There are drivers who are confident and don't monitor the signage only to figure out in accidents themselves," Moreno said.

The RTMI management said they would pay for the hospital expenses of the victims.(Annabelle Ricalde with reports from Stephen Capillas)
