Air security cop shot in self-defense

IT WAS self-defense that compelled one member of the Aviation Security Group (ASG) to shoot down two top police officials last Friday morning at the Lumbia airport.

Deputy Police Director Chief Inspector Antonio Montalba said this in relation to the investigation on Police Officer 1 Zenon Madrial who remains confined and under tight security at one of the city hospitals.

City Police Director Senior Supterintendent Honorio Cervantes earlier said he doubts whether the transfer order on Madrial caused him to shoot Superintendent Loreno Vicente, chief of the 10th ASC-PNP and deputy commander Chief Inspector Ali Hadji Ali.

"As police officers we are always aware of the possibility of being transferred to another area by our superiors and we are professionals in dealing with this," Cervantes told dxIF Bombo Radyo in an interview.

Madrial sustained gunshot wounds on his leg at the ASG office during the five-minute Lumbia airport shootout. The suspect is placed under tight security in order to prevent retaliation from one of the victims's relatives.

"He admitted to shooting to death Colonel Vicente and Major Ali," Montalba said even as he declined to give further details on the incident.

The ASG office in Bancasi Airport, Butuan City sent the transfer order to Madrial.

Charges of double murder are prepared to be file against Madrial by the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo).

Both Vicente and Ali sustained gunshot wounds on the head with the latter still holding his service .45 pistol long after being gunned down with Madrial's .9mm pistol.

Investigation by the Scene of the Crime Operations (Soco) showed that two pistols were seen and recovered from the crime scene.

Madrial supposedly got his .9mm firearm from another police officer and he managed to board a taxi to head to a hospital.

The transfer order issued through the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) central office was initially pointed out as the motive behind the shooting.

Madrial supposedly argued with the two superiors and the argument soon resulted to that fatal shootout. (Annabelle Ricalde with a report from Stephen Capillas)
