Battle of Surigao Strait hailed Tuesday By Ben Serrano
SURIGAO CITY -- The "Battle of Surigao Strait" will be remembered Tuesday by the local government units here in simple ceremonies.
The Battle of Surigao Strait happened just midnight of October 24 and 25, 1944 when the last seen encounter of battleships between the American and Japanese naval forces took place there.
The encounter led to the sinking of Japanese Naval flagships Yamashiro and Fuso after Vice Admiral Nishimura ordered an attack to American amphibious forces off Samar.
The laying of flowers at the Surigao City's Lipata Wharf will highlight today's ceremonial activities.
A shrine was constructed under the auspices of the Surigao Heritage Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with the local government units of Surigao City and Surigao del Norte led by City Mayor Alfonso Casurra and Surigao del Norte Governor Robert Lyndon Barbers.
The annual commemoration activities, is spearheaded by the Surigao Heritage Foundation, Inc. headed by former PPA port manager Fernando Almeda, Jr.
The Battle of Surigao Strait was also known as the final return payment for Pearl Harbor, for most of the American ships had been seriously damaged or sunk in December 1941.
