SPC, STI cagers in torrid start By Lynde Salgados
A BREATHTAKING start.
Southern Philippine College and System Technology Institute both opened their college basketball campaign in nail-biting fashion at the start of the 2005 Prisaa Meet here Monday at Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center.
SPC's unselfish team effort allowed them to defuse Acsat's comeback try in a 49-41 victory.
"We have to give credit to the boys for their on-court communication. Nagkasinabot gyod sila mao nga na-sustain among lead," Wiwie Daba's assistant coach Yoyong Cagas told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Bannered by old mainstays Arib Manabat, Arvin Akut and Peter Paul Carope, SPC's triumphant debut was also aided by the absence of Acsat's explosive tandem of Glen Pardillo and Nicho Pupos who are now playing for Acsat-Manila.
"Medyo nakapabor sab `mi kay silang Harvey Igtos ug Marcoso na lang ang nabilin sa mga saligando ni coach Boy (Dacoco). Pero sayo pa kaayo nga mag-celebrate. Daghan pa ang mahitabo," Cagas said.
Taking the spoiler role of the day, however, was newcomer STI of coach Allen Dangcal.
Biting the dust of Liceo de Cagayan University most of the way, STI employed a full-court press in the killer stretch to pull off a come-from-behind victory against the wards of veteran mentor Boyet Noble.
"Nasapon gyod ang 5 points nga labaw sa Liceo sa ilang trapping defense but the
Senior Titans have the capability to bounce back. This is going to be an exciting cage rivalry in the tertiary basketball," one diehard Prisaa follower, said.
SPC's junior squad took a different route, however, bowing to their heftier rivals from Corpus Christi high school.
