PPA-NorMin improves terminal facilities

THE Port District of Northern Mindanao of the Philippine Ports Authority (PDNM) undertook several improvements and repair projects for the first quarter of 2005 for its various ports to make them more efficient and convenient for travelers and other port users.
In a press statement sent to Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro, Ernesto J. Fernando, PDNM Port District manager, said the improvement of the Passenger Terminal Complex of the Port of Cagayan de Oro is in full swing with the construction of a covered baggage area, a VIP lounge, a child care center and a covered walkway at an actual cost of P4.955 million.
The temporary Passenger Terminal Building (PTB), formerly a transit shed, is converted into a modular type of structure to accommodate passengers is also being improved.
Constituting the second phase of the Passenger Terminal Complex, the temporary PTB would soon give way to a permanent structure.
The PTB has a total area of 2,100 square meters with a seating capacity of about 600 passengers.
It started to operate on July 02, 2004 and is equipped with amenities like clean rest rooms and air conditioning units.
The Passenger Terminal Complex Phase I have been operational since July 2004 and provide a parking area for about 90 private vehicles and a parking area for about 80 public utilities at any point in time.
Upon its completion at a total estimated cost of P100 million, the PTC of the Port of Cagayan de Oro is envisioned to be a very modern passenger terminal facility with restaurants, executive lounges, gift shops, child care centers, and other modern amenities at par with international standards.
Fernando also disclosed that at the Port Management Office of Iligan, PPA repaired the under deck of the reinforced Concrete pier at the Port of Sultan Naga Dimaporo in Lanao del Norte and replaced the rubber dock fenders at the Port of Nasipit.
PDNM also spent about P300,000 for the maintenance of its five ports in Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Ozamiz, Nasipit, and Surigao for the first quarter of 2005.
A major project already in the pipeline and approved during the first quarter of 2005 is the construction of an additional 65 meters RC wharf at the Port of Ozamiz at a cost of P82.9 million.
"This will provide the Port of Ozamiz additional berthing space to accommodate more vessels calling at its port," he said.
