Women lawyers hold fundraiser Friday night
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

THE Federacion International de Abogadas-Cagayan de Oro City and Misamis Oriental Chapter (Fida-CDO-MisOr) disclosed there is now a growing number of women and children who are coming out to file charges against those who perpetrated violence against them.

Because of this, same organization of lady lawyers tonight and tomorrow night will be holding what they call "That's Legal Entertainment, Caught in the Act Again!" to raise funds to put up a shelter building for these women and children who are victims of violence.

Fida-CDO-MisOr chapter president lawyer Christy Jugador, together with Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 10 legal counsel Remy Llego and lady prosecutors Gladys Naduma and Eldred Cole, said there are now more and more women who are filing charges against men and other perpetrators of violence.

They said though they don't exactly have the estimates but the numbers are growing as compared to the past years.

"That is why we are having this fund raising for these women and children who are victims of violence," Jugador said during a press conference at Consuelo's Restaurant that was also attended by lawyers Evelyn Ramos, Melanie Gasendo, Zeny Padero and Ma. Caridad San Jose among others.

These lady lawyers said the growing number of women coming out may be due to how Congress approved Republic Act No. 9262 also known as "An Act Defining Violence Against Women and Children".

Galvez explained that this coming out for women who are victims of violence is a "good sign."

"But we hope that this will serve as a wake up call to other members of society to reevaluate how the Ina ng Tahanan should be treated," she said.

Variety show

Llego disclosed that there are also more women who are seeking the help of the DSWD 10 even those who were raped by their husbands.

"Naa naman gani diri sa atoa nga bana nga nang-rape sa iyang asawa nga napriso na (There is now even a case here in our city wherein the husband got imprisoned for raping his own wife)," she said.

Jugador said Fida, which is composed of some 95 lady lawyers, was limited to giving only free legal services and coordinating with the government and non-government organizations to help out women and their children who are victims of violence.

"We believe that this is no longer enough," she said.

"That's Legal Entertainment, Caught in the Act Again!" is a variety show of songs and dances showcasing the talents of Fida members.

The public is invited to be a part of this worthy cause on November 11 and 12, 2005 at 8:00 p.m. at the Grand Caprice, Lim Ket Kai Center. Tickets at popular prices are available at the gates.

Fida is an international organization of lady lawyers. It believes that nothing protects women fervently and passionately than women themselves.

Thus, Fida has taken the cudgels for women, especially those vulnerable to domestic abuse.

"That's Legal Entertainment, Caught in the Act Again" is just one of the many activities lined up to raise finances for its various projects aimed at protecting and promoting women's rights and welfare.

The sponsors for this even include Cagayan de Oro Mayor Vicente Emano, Cagayan de Oro Representative Constantino Jaraula, Misamis Oriental First District Representative Danilo Lagbas, Tagoloan mayor Yevygeny Emano, Steag Power, Inc., STRz Sounds Stage, Lights Electronics Center, Stanphil, Oroport Cargohandling Service, Inc., Phividec Industrial Authority, Jacinto Southern Energy Corporation.
