Mindanao media mark slain photographer's day By Richel V. Umel Lanao correspondent
TUBOD, Lanao del Norte -- Mindanao journalist commemorates in Davao City the death of slain photo journalist Gene Boyed Lumawag after 365 days of seeking illusive justice.
Lumawag was shot in downtown Jolo while he was taking a photograph of the sunset by the pier on November 12 last year.
In a news briefing Wednesday, National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales vowed to look into the case following reports that Lumawag's triggerman may have been a member of an intelligence operatives team.
There were suspected Abu Sayaf personalities who were identified as Omar and Iting Sailani that were issued with warrants on December 13, 2004 by Presiding Judge Allan Abubakar of Regional Trial Court, but not one of the suspects were arrested.
Based on records from National Union of Journalists (NUJP), GeneBoyd Lumawag was the ninth journalist killed in 2004 and the 58th slain journalist since 1986.
Gene Boyd was a photojournalist of MindaNews in Davao City. He was trained by his father, Rene Lumawag, a SunStar-Davao Photo Editor.
Rene Lumawag said his son "was a victim of wrong information or a wrong intelligence report."
The commemoration of Gene Boyd Lumawag's first death anniversarry was celebrated with a mass at St. Jude Parish and a visit at San Pedro memorial park where the dead body was buried and an opening of Gene Boyd's masterpiece at NCCC Mall "Beyond the Sunset."
Masses were also celebrated in Mt. Carmel Parish in Jolo, sulu and other parts of Mindanao.
