Oro chessers eye 1st Aurora Open By Lynde Salgados
* Around P50,000 in cash prizes are at stake
WITH no positive development yet to share about across the 64-square-board, Cagayan de Oro woodpushers are looking forward to the cash-rich event later this month in Aurora, Zamboanga del Sur.
Dubbed as "1st Mayor Enrique Cabahug Cup Chess Tournament Visayas-Mindanao Open" and organized by the Black Knight Chess Club, it will be held on Nov. 26-27 with more or less P50,000 in cash prizes awaiting the winners.
"Puwersado ta nga manglangyaw ani kay hapit na mag-December wala pa gyoy gihimo nga torneyo atong club," said one Divisoria Chess habitue, referring to the now unheard Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Chess Club (CMOCC).
BKCC president Wilhelm Joey D. Ardiente, also the NCFP coordinator for Region 9, said the Aurora chessfest is open to all players--rated or unrated, master or non-master--for as long that they are bonafide residents of Visayas and Mindanao.
"We're organizing this event to show our whole-hearted support to grassroots chess development in the country," Ardiente told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
The champion is guaranteed to receive the P20,000 top purse, while the second and third finishers will get P10,000 and P5,000, respectively, also with trophies.
Fourth and fifth placers will be given P3,000 and P2,000 each with those rounding up the top-10 circle out to settle for the consolation prizes of P1,000 apiece.
Minor prizes and awards are the following:
Top Senior (60 years old above)--P500 plus certificate.
Top Junior (20 years old under)--P500 plus certificate.
Top Kiddies (14 years old under)--P500 plus certificate.
Top Lady--P500 plus certificate.
Top Executive--P500 plus certificate.
For reservation and further details, Ardiente is encouraging interested parties to get in touch with this contact cell numbers: 0918-9079710 and 09195702104.
Meanwhile, Patag chess mentor Vitaliano "Choy" Dalauta is clamoring for the reorganization of the Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Chess Club Incorporated, which appeared to have been forsaken by its inactive officials.
"Kon pasagdahan lang nato nga i-tolerate ang mga nagdala diha bisan walay gibuhat...mamatay gyod ang development sa mga bata dinhi nga adunay potential sa chess. Panahon na nga ato kining lingkoran aron adunay kitay makab-ot nga kausaban," said Dalauta whose 19-year-old protege, Bryan Jose had just won the national junior championship of the 2005 Shell Youth Active chess tournament.
