Forest management project launched
OFFICIALS of partner organizations and entities recently inked a contract for the implementation of the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) Forest Project in four Community-Based Forest Management (CBFM) areas in Talakag and Baungon, Bukidnon.
The signing of the contract was the highlight of the launching activities of the first community-based rubber tree plantation project in the country to be supported by DBP Officials.
Present during the contract signing were DBP Executive Vice President and Head of the Program Development Group Elizabeth P. Ong; Department of Environment and Natural Resources Regional Executive Director Maximo O. Dichoso; Masanobi Suguira, chairman and CEO of Japan Philippines Latex Technology Inc.; president of the four People's Organizations; Vice Governor Alex Calingasan, representing the Provincial Government of Bukidnon; and Mayor Amado Noble of Talakag.
According to Dichoso, the four people's organizations would be responsible for the establishment of a 500-hectare rubber tree plantation in their respective CBFM areas.
He said DENR is supportive of the CBFM Program.
Moreover, the project should rehabilitate our denuded forest, Dichoso added.
For her part, Ong revealed that the project is the fourth and biggest DBP Forest Project.
Realization
Ong said this is the first time that DBP would have partnership with a private firm--the Japan Philippines Latex Technology, Inc. in its campaign to reforest our uplands and provide livelihood opportunities to People's Organizations. The DBP would provide funding for the project.
Suguira, meanwhile, disclosed that he studied in the Philippines and it is his dream to contribute to the social and economic development of the country.
He and his partners have established the JPLT Processing Plant in Talakag.
He added he is thankful to be a part of the DBP Forest Project, as this would pave the way for the realization of his dream.
The 4 CBFM People's Organizations who are partners of the project are the following: LIDASAFA or Liguron-Dagundalahon-Sagaran ISF Project at Liguron, Talakag; TAIDAMCO-ARB or Talakag Agro-Industrial Development Multi-Purpose Coop-Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries at Dominorog, Talakag; MABUHAY, Inc. or Magsasakang Bubuhay sa Likas Yaman at Baungon; and KUFFA or Kalilangan United Forest Farmers at Kalilangan, Baungon, Bukidnon.
The People's Organizations would undertake actual planting, cultivation, maintenance and other activities in the establishment of the rubber tree plantation.
The total area is to be established as rubber tree plantation. The JPLT would provide technical expertise and financial resources for the project development.
Values formation and livelihood training programs would be spearheaded by JPLT.
The project is expected to contribute to the rebuilding of the Philippine natural latex industry.
A ceremonial tree planting was also conducted at the JPLT Processing Plant.
Members of the People's Organizations, media and representatives of the contracting parties also attended the launching activity.
The other projects of DBP Forest Program are located in Abucay, Bataan; Alabel, Sarangani; and Marilog district, Davao City. (Press release)
