GSIS hoopsters on the rampage By Lynde Salgados
Now leading Southland's inter-club caging with a 2-0 card
IT SEEMS there's no stopping the GSIS hoopsters from imposing their supremacy in the inter-club level of the ongoing Southland Sports League basketball tournament here at Liceo de Cagayan University gym.
After blasting Thurs-Sun by 14 points on Saturday, GSIS proved equal to the task on Sunday night, crawling back from a 5-point second-quarter deficit to beat the youth-laden ABS-CBN-Auto Planet by 6 points.
Now racing to a comfortable 2-0 start, GSIS playing coach JP Pabillore is becoming more optimistic to face the challenge in their next outings.
"We just played basketball according to its own grammar. Of course, we prepared hard so as not to lag behind in stamina. Because we have the size and height, we take advantage of the match-up play. We control the rebounds and always remind each other that there should be no easy baskets for our rival teams. As the old cliche suggests, best defense is the best offense," Pabillore told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Pabillore is also happy to note that GSIS was able to overcome Auto Planet of NBC Coach of the Year Arvin Martinez.
"A happy feeling about this development comes naturally kay sila (Auto Planet) ang nagpilde sa among sister team," said Pabillore, obviously referring to the MRD Metal Trading-backed Ballpals.
Against Thurs-Sun, GSIS banked on the younger-looking fivesome of Anton Pabillore, Babart Acaylar, Harvey Cu¤ada, Tata Lucido and Alvin Llavore. While the towering presence of veterans Joseph Villareal, Rex Armojillas, Boyet Burias and Jojo Mahistrado did the chief damage on Auto Planet's fierce struggle.
Auto Planet is also holding a respectable 2-1 win-loss ledger after outlasting Subokin on Saturday.
Over at Phase I court in NHA Kauswagan, White Team Hardball again relied on the outside bombings of Pinggoy Castro to secure its third-straight win in the inter-color tourney of the Street Players Club.
Tangerine Newlights, skippered by the hardworking backcourt tandem of Ike Namalata and Major Ambrocio, meanwhile resurrected its own title bid after a convincing triumph over the slowly deteriorating Green Polo Mint.
