A gold finish by Marna Pabillore in SEA Games
By Lynde Salgados

SHE sacrificed a lot for it.

With a fixed goal in mind, Cagayan de Oro's very own Marna Pabillore was finally rewarded Monday, fulfilling a long cherished dream of attaining greatness in the tough world of karatedo.

The 25-year-old Pabillore, who prepared hard for the defining moment of her athletic career, displayed a grim determination in the finals of the kumite competition at the Mandaue Sports Complex in Cebu City.

With her dazzling skills and speed, Marna overwhelmed her Thai opponent, 6-2 enroute to secure the keenly desired gold in -53 kilogram that eluded the "certified football lover" in her last three karatedo SEA Games Meet appearances.

"It's mission accomplished for Marna. Her feat in this year's episode of the South East Asian Games only proved once more that there's no substitute to hard work," said her older sister and reliable mentor Victoria "Kakay" Pabillore who already declared earlier that a workaholic and well-disciplined Marna has got what it takes to share the crowning SEA Games glory.

"Even now she could bare her fangs right away," was Kakay's fearless forecast then.

And her ward did it in style to exorcize the ghost of her failed gold attempts in Malaysia, Korea, and Vietnam.

"At any rate, her being an active player on the football field also helped Marna to further develop her footwork in martial arts as well as increased her speed," one local footballer, remarked.

Marna's 28-year-old nephew Jose Marie Pabillore failed to duplicate his gold finish in Malaysia, some three years ago, but took his pride intact by helping the host country won two bronzes in men's team and individual kumite events.

Joey had completely dominated his Vietnamese foe, 3-0 in the fight for bronze in 75+ category. But lady luck did not smile on him in his semifinal bout.

"Sayang, one-point lang gyod ang ilang ligas. But that's all part of the game," their uncle and durable sportsman JP Pabillore told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
