Power coop plans P500 million upgrade
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

THE Misamis Oriental I Electric Cooperative (Moresco 1) is now undertaking a P500 million modernization program to further improve services to their members and be more competitive against other power distributors in Northern Mindanao, Moresco I president Pedrito Baculio said Tuesday.

Moresco I has also allocated some P2 million just to train a new breed of electricity linemen all from the Province of Misamis Oriental that would not only climb tall power posts, but also, master the art of doing repairs without turning off the electricity or otherwise called "Hotline Repair."

Baculio just came from the 3rd Seminar on Harmonised Policy Instruments for the Promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Asean Member Countries held in Bangkok, Thailand on November 14-15.

He noted that there are now several modern technologies that their cooperative could very well apply to improve its services.

He said their board of directors has recently agreed to allocate P500 million just for the upgrading its facilities and other services.

Baculio said they do not just want to upgrade their physical facilities, but also, are into skills and "culture" training new breed of people to operate the modern equipment.

He said they are particularly looking at having a new set of linemen to gradually takeover some of their already retiring linemen.

"Kay kasagaran namong mga linemen mga tigulang na ug mang retire naman," he said.

Baculio said they have now allocated some P2 million for the seminars and other trainings of their men.

He said this particularly on the 90 days live-in training program for new linemen undertaken with the help of some trainers from Cebu Electric Cooperative.

"After their graduation, they would be our Warriors of Light. One fully-trained lineman would be equivalent to five linemen," he said.

But Baculio admitted that out of the 165 Misamisnons who submitted their applications, it this was reduced to only 115 trainees for the first day last November 8 and merely 57 trainees as of November 25.

He said they even came up with what they called as the "Graveyard of the Cowards" where the hardhats of those who quit from the training are displayed with their first names written on its front.

"Kini sila dili lang mokatkat sa poste mo-chacha pa didto. Unya tudloan pud kini sila nga mohikap ug kuryente," he said.

These 20 to 25 years old Misamisnons who are training to be "Warriors of Light" are promised P15,000 per month starting salary and a contract with Moresco until they reach the age of 40 years old. They are set to finish their training this January 8, 2006.

Their trainers include Tessie Rodriguez, Adelina Real, Roselaine Jaranilla, Jeanette Rosales, Lugait-Manticao lead man Joy Gil Mahinay, Opol lead man Doding Villastique, CEBECO representative Willy Trinidad, Operations and maintenance foreman Thomas Aranjuez.
