DILG wants report on 'sex tong' cops By Lizanilla J. Amarga
SOME Cagayan de Oro police officers are being given the tag of "sex-tong cops" as they are no longer going around the city streets asking for money but for sexual favors from sex workers in exchange for some form of "protection," a group revealed Thursday.
The regional office of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is now asking for a formal report on this for proper action to be taken by the regional office of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Talikala Inc. area coordinator Carina Sajonia confirmed reports that indeed there were some women in their center who confessed that there are police officers who are into this detestable practice.
"It's existing," she said during the press conference at Dynasty Hotel Thursday.
The press conference was in connection to the World's Aids/HIV day sponsored by Kartada Tres, a movement among the Youth Council in Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.
Earlier, there were reports that a police patrol car and some other police officers roam around the city streets to check on pimps and prostituted women.
But instead of warning them off or actually arresting them as mandated by law, these cops ask for sexual favors from these prostituted women or ask pimps to "contact" their women.
Also, Sajonia recounted how Talikala members help out prostituted women during a raid and accompany them to the Hall of Justice.
She said because of this support they are extending to prostituted women they have gotten to know some of the raiding police officers.
But when Talikala members visit establishments where some of the prostituted women are working, she said they notice these raiding police officers are enjoying the services of these firms.
"We ask these police officers whether they were here to raid the establishment but they would reply nga wala naa lang mi diri para lingaw-lingaw lang (no we are not here to conduct a raid but only to enjoy ourselves)," she said.
For the side of the police officers, DILG 10 local government operations officer Foster Anayron said there is a need for the filing of a formal report on this matter.
He said this as the dignity and image of the police officers would be tainted if nothing should be done to stop such deplorable acts.
"So that they can act on this matter that would definitely stain the integrity of the agency," he said. "The PNP, as part of the DILG family, we are very much concern on this matter and a formal report should be submitted to substantiate these allegations."
