Oro's Basadre boots out Thailand brawler

* As he rallies from behind to keep his gold quest alive

BACOLOD CITY -- It was another good day for Pinoy boxers as the Philippines won all its matches, and assured of one silver medal.

The Filipinos bid to regain the over-all title from Thailand also remains on target.

The Philippines, which only won one gold in Vietnam SEA Games, has yet to lose a single match in the first three days of competition.

Annie Albania assured the country of a silver after winning the semifinals, although former ALA Boy Genebert Basadre had the biggest win as he eliminated Tun Dansamak of Thailand, 28-19 in the quarterfinal round of the lightweight division.

Basadre, who is from Cagayan de Oro City, was on the defensive early as Dansamak used his jabs effectively for a 3-1 lead before Basadre caught up at 4-4 and went on to lead 7-4 at the end of the first round.

Quick points

With Dansamak exposing his head, Basadre used the 1-2 combination effectively in the second as he padded his lead to 18-9 going into the third.

The Thai picked five quick points in the third with body shots to narrow the lead to 18-13 before a series of uppercuts by Basadre had him up 23-16 before the final round, where the Pinoy fighter danced around the ring to protect his lead.

On the other hand, Albana scored her second straight referee stopped contest (RSC) win in the women's flyweight division.

Give everything

Albana only needed one round as she scored 15 unanswered points before the referee stepped in.

Joegen Ladon, for his part, never gave Indonesia's Arenaldo Moniaga a chance for his 26-12 win in the quarterfinal of the featherweight division.

"I didn't take anything for granted for this fight because I saw him (Moniaga) in his fight against Vietnam and he was very good. When I realized I could get him, I just gave everything," Ladon said.

Meanwhile, the Philippines hiked it's gold tally to 51 golds as of 9 p.m. last night.

The Philippines won golds yesterday in wrestling, bowling, swimming, taekwondo, diving, kayaking and athletics. (MTL)
