British, NGOs strengthen ties
ILIGAN CITY -- The recent visit of two official representatives from the British government to Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur had confirmed a stronger linkage between the British embassy and the civil society organizations through the Volunteer Service Organization (VSO).
VSO PEACE Mindanao Program Area Manager Romulo dela Rosa, who coordinated the recent visit of Second Secretary Sarah Parsons of the British Embassy and Margaret Tongue, Southeast Asian Desk Officer of the Commonwealth of Great Britain in London, said the visit signifies the interest of Britain and the European Commission in peace-building in Mindanao.
The officials made a courtesy call on Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz and Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda Dimaporo.
The team, accompanied by VSO staff and volunteers, visited Inudaran, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.
British officials visited the post-conflict community-based housing program and met with local residents to assess the extent of accomplishment of the VSO and the civil society organizations in the area.
Inudaran, once the conflict-ridden area of Lanao del Norte, has now become the symbol of peace and efforts are underway for the VSO and the civil society organizations to maximize peace-building and confidence building effort.
The British Embassy and the European Commission have funded VSO programs and initiatives on peace building together with VSO's strategic partner Organizations.
Parsons and Tongue also met with representatives of CSO and NOG partner organizations like CSO-FP, Pakigdait, Kalumudan, Kamagogopa, Hope for Change, Life for Water, BirthDev, RDRRAC, Salam Women, CSO-LNPPD, LEAD, MUCARD, Philippine Muslim Welfare society, LAFCOD, MARADECA and GPRC.
