Southland, 'Mini Jam' cagings resume Saturday By Lynde Salgados
UAAP standouts LA Tenorio, Intal wow XU gym crowd
BALLPALS and Thurs-Sun, both coming from stinging defeats, lock horns Saturday afternoon in the 4 p.m. resumption of the Southland caging here at Liceo gymnasium.
Skippered by the veteran troika of Angking Saura, Loloy Gelogo and Arnel Bag-ao, Thurs-Sun expects Ballpals to be equipped with birth certificates that cost the latter a crucial match with Subokin last weekend.
"Pero mas sakit 'tong among pagkapilde sa Subokin kay labaw mi'g one-point with only a second left na-technical pa gyod kay unom ang nakasulod sa amo sa korte. Call it as superstitious belief pero mora'g gitiaw-tiawan 'mi sa among kauban sa club nga namatay," Saura told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
The MRD Metal Trading-backed Ballpals, mentored by James Abucejo, hopes to draw quality minutes from Baloy Fernandez, Jerez Abacahin, Pinggoy Castro, Carlo Josol, and Bobby Diaz in its bid to improve its 1-2 win loss ledger.
Sunday at 6 p.m., Ballpals will confront its sister squad, GSIS-Carmen, which currently shares the lead with Subokin at 2-1 in the exciting inter-club rivalry.
Over at Xavier University gym, the host team of coach Manny Diaz won its initial matches in the pasarelle and junior divisions against the visiting Cebu-Sacred Heart Jesuit, even as the Ateneo de Manila -- powered by the likes of UAAP standout LA Tenorio and the slam-dunking Intal -- looks heading to dominate the tertiary invitational basketball of the Xavier Days dubbed as "Mini-Jam."
"Unlike last year, medyo bata kaayo among mga material karon so, we have a slim chance to win here again," said Cagayan de Oro native Hermogenes Anciado who's now coaching the Sacred Heart high school varsity team of Cebu city.
