Street kids take center stage By XU students Michelle Belen, Rods De Asis, and Paula Borja
THESE are the little kids we have always seen as the dregs of society, the pesky little creatures who are always tugging on our shirts, asking "Ate, kuya, panghatag piso beh."
This time around, we decided not to give them the piso they are always asking for, but instead we gave them the chance to portray themselves in a different light in the eyes of the Cagayan de Oro residents.
"Mga Anghel sa Kalye", a streetchildren's variety show for a cause, featured seven street kids in Cagayan de Oro city, spearheaded by the Development Communication students of Xavier University. What began as a class requirement turned into a heartwarming experience for all people involved.
The one-hour show was packed wall to wall with performances from the kids. An interpretative dance formally opened the show, followed by a comic skit and dance presentations. In between performances, the kids were introduced in a video presentation, with them candidly sharing their dreams for the future. This was creatively supplemented by a mini ramp modeling with the kids strutting all over the stage dressed up in what they wanted to become when they grow up. Some of them cam dressed as soldier, a teacher, a basketball player, a doctor, and a nurse.
"Mga Anghel sa Kalye" awoke the sleeping talents in these kids and shoved them into the spotlight. They surprised the audience.
These are the children who have been relegated to the sidelines and dismissed as insignificant. The variety show somehow successfully broke the stereotype.
