Rapanot, Musor make it to regl chess meet
By Lynde Salgados

* As Dalauta and Lennon Hart share the championship honors

UNPREDICTABLE Alfredo Rapanot Jr. of Carmen National High School and Abdul Khalid Musor of West City Central School spoiled the final round bids of Antonio Chavez Jr. of City High and Riel Mark Cainglet of Bonbon Elementary School to book a seat in the forthcoming Palaro Meet for Northern Mindanao athletes.

Chavez and Cainglet's fall thus left Bonbon compatriot Lennon Hart Salgados as the only FCD disciple surviving the qualifying chess matches among the Prisaa, Cosaa and Public school athletes.

The 10-year-old Cainglet, who was just taught of the rudiments of the game, got the chance to contest the board 2 slot when he upsets many-time elementary Prisaa champion G'ralz Olassiman of Corpus Christi.

"Mo-prevail gyod ang experience kay one-piece up na si Cainglet pero nalambahan pa ni Musor," said Lennon who played through undefeated to secure the board 1 place in elementary level.

Chavez, who agreed to a penultimate-round draw with secondary boys ruler Randolph Dalauta of Corpus Christi, needed just another draw to make it to the regional meet tentatively set in Tangub city early next year.

But Rapanot, who had the disadvantage of handling with the black pieces, surprised his 2005 Milolympics tormentor in a sharp battle of the Sicilian defense.

"It was curtains down for Chavez after he retreated his Knight to b3 square instead of provoking a double-edged fight with Nd5. Nawaslap na hinoon siya following a very strong kingside attack," said Macanhan chess mentor Emmanuel Crisologo.

In the distaff side, Beverliza Bernardo and Analiza Jamaca of West City Central School made a 1-2 finish while secondary counterparts Lorelie Cuizon of Carmen National High School and Shian Tigulo of Corpus Christi did the same to join Dalauta, Rapanot, Salgados and Musor in the regional meet.

The daylong elimination was notably a success with Penny Maestrado now supervising the chess event, which for the first time, followed the standard Swiss system format.
