Champion's purse raised to P15,000

RICHARD Natividad led 15 other players who advanced to the knockout stages of the Rose Chess Open after topping the elimination round at SM City Cebu.

All 16 players, who bested a field of 140 participants, were actually tied with 5.5 points each after the seventh and final round with Natividad having the best tiebreak score of 26 points.

Five out-of-town players also earned tickets to the round of 16 led by National Master Levi Mercado of Cagayan de Oro, who finished third in the elimination round. Other Cagayan de Oro players who advanced to the next round were Nazario Ubanan, Joseph Maestrado, and Sun.Star Star Cagayan de Oro sports correspondent Jaime Frias.

"Pero grabe akong naagian. After a bad start, I have to sweep the remaining four rounds inorder to advance, which I managed to do. Satisfy na ko nga nakaabot sa Round of 16," Maestrado told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro over the phone.

Johnnel Balquin of Misamis Oriental completed the out-of-town cast.

As expected, the locals dominated the round-of-16 entries, securing 11 of the 16 spots.
