Fisheries bureau extends seaweed project
TO HELP the local governments combat illegal fishing activities in Northern Mindanao, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar) recently turned over a marine engine and paraphernalia to the municipal government of Balingoan in Misamis Oriental.
The turnover was conducted during the opening of the seaweed production training in the municipality.
Bfar Regional Director for Northern Mindanao Arlene B. Pantanosas said the bureau is willing to counterpart with the LGUs in protecting and conserving the region's marine resources, not only for today, but also for the future.
Pantanosas also inspired the trainees to work hard in expanding their area and gain additional income after 30 days of culturing their seaweeds.
For her part, Balingoan Mayor Perlita Espero expressed gratitude to Bfar for the co-shared project and the long-awaited marine engine.
She encouraged the fisherfolk to keep on trying until they would be successful in culturing their seaweeds.
At the same time, Vice Mayor Pedro Panulaya committed to help in making their patrol boat operational despite financial difficulties.
Panulaya urged the fisherfolk to respect each other, while harboring humility and patience, as important values for their cooperative to be successful.
The three-day training discussed the status of the seaweed industry in Northern Mindanao Region, its biology and economic importance, and project care, maintenance, and marketing.
Hands-on activities were likewise conducted to reinforce the lectures. (Trends)
