Local boxing prospects remain dim for Oro By Lynde Salgados
THE Philippines produced one of its Southeast Asian (SEA) Games gold medalists in the squared ropes from Cagayan de Oro city in hardworking pugilist Genebert Basadre.
But barangay 06 chairman Mario Eronico, the leading propagator of amateur boxing development in the city, refused to agree that Basadre's feat thus indicates a positive indication of what could be a blithe horizon awaiting the young aspiring boxers in the locality.
In fact, Eronico--who also mentored RP team standout Violito Payla and some other luminaries aside from Basadre--instead predicts a bleak prospect for the next generation of Manny Pacquiao wannabes in the City of Golden Friendship.
Prodded with questions like: Can we expect more Paylas or Basadres to come in the near future from Cagayan de Oro shore? The always buoyant Eronico could only shake his head with a gloomy stroke of clever words to say that "I'm 101 percent sure that such illusion is already a thing of the past kay layo na kaayo ang programa sa atong gobiyerno karon."
During the previous administration of Pablo Magtajas, Eronico said that financial, logistical and morale supports were abound which is in stark contrast to the present time.
"So, dili na gyod kita magdahom nga mausab pa ang golden years nga milabay na sa history of Cagayan de Oro amateur boxing development," Eronico claimed.
His barangay's undisputed chieftain for so many years now, Eronico remembered Basadre as a little brave kid who has not been circumcised yet when the latter approached him for the purpose.
"Wala pay tuli ug mga 27 kilos lang siya sa dihang nahidangat si Basadre sa akong poder. Anak lagi sa pobre nga pamilya kay traysikad drayber lang ang amahan. Karon, may kaugalingon na nga dyip de pasahero nga gipasadahan sa iyang tatay. Mao kana ang mahimong kaayo sa boxing ngadto sa mga batan-on natong atleta nga may gitagong talagsaon nga talento," Eronico said.
