MARAWI CITY -- A group of armed men opened fire at a vehicle at the town center of Tamparan, Lanao del Sur at about noon Friday, killing five people and wounding a 5-year-old child, the military said.

Initial reports showed that while a rust-colored Revo Toyota vehicle was inside the town center in Tamparan, a group of armed men, later identified as "Delta Force," opened fire at the vehicle with high-powered firearms.

According to the reports, at least two male and three female occupants inside the vehicle were killed instantly while a 5-year-old child was wounded but survived the attack.

The military said all victims were residents of the adjoining towns of Maguing and Lumba Bayabao in Lanao del Sur.

The report however did not say what the motive was for the ambush.

Earlier last week, fighting erupted in the town of Tubaran, Lanao del Sur when the Kibad and Masigay clans continued their skirmishes over a long-standing "rido" (family feud) following the death of a member of one of the clans last month.

Acting Lanao del Sur Governor Monera Macabangon settled a "rido" in her office at the Lanao del Sur provincial capitol between the two groups.

Blood money reportedly amounting to half a million pesos were paid to the aggrieved party witnessed by two town mayors, policemen, and town leaders.

Feuding families in Lanao del Sur observed calm and peace during the celebration of "Ei"dl Adha" or "The Feast of Sacrifice" on January 10.

Marawi City Catholic Bishop Edwin dela Pena, during the ceremony of the "Feast of Sacrifice" held at the Mindanao State University, said Lanao del Sur has been burning lately with family feuds.

Dela Pena added that reconciling with adversaries during the observance of the Ei'dl Adha is a sacrifice pleasing to the Creator.

Marines 1st Brigade deputy commander Colonel Luisito Marcelino said the Kibad and the Masigay families have already agreed that the suspect in the killing will be turned over to custody of the police pending the filing of a case.

"The situation at Tubaran is now back to normal," Marcelino said.
