Rebels deny plot on Talisayan village chiefs
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

NATIONAL Democratic Front-North Central Mindanao (NDF-NCM) spokesperson Cesar Renerio debunked the statements of a town mayor that they are targeting five more barangay captains in Talisayan, Misamis Oriental.

The communist said at the same time that their armed wing and local liquidation squad, the New People's Army (NPA) Eking Balacuit Command, was the one who recently gunned down barangay captain Editha Bodbod of Putting Balas, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental.

In a statement to Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro, Renerio said, "There is not an iota of truth in the allegation of Talisayan Mayor Rommel Maslog that there are five more barangay captains in the municipality who are being targeted for revolutionary justice by the NPA of the Eking Balacuit Command."

Maslog said earlier after Bodbod's death, he has received reports that five more of his barangay captains are in the target list of the NPA.

He said that though the reports are yet to be fully confirmed, he and his barangay officials have beefed up security measures for other NPA attacks.

"I told them not to take these reports lightly as they might prove true," he said.

But Renerio said although there is no truth to the claims that five Talisayan barangay captains are in their target list, those who commit crimes against the masses and the revolutionary government will be severely dealt with.

Renerio said their group have three main rules of discipline--obey orders in all your actions, do not take away from the masses a single piece of thread or even a fragment of a needle, and turn in everything confiscated.

He said among the acts they considered crimes were "espionage and harassment," like being an "active military spy" and "active in creating barangay intelligence networks.

"For as long as a person or persons do not commit such crimes they are not supposed to worry for they have done nothing detrimental to the revolutionary movement and masses," said Renerio.

Earlier, Talisayan municipal police officer SPO2 Francisco Ruiz said three murder suspects who were described to be young and possibly NPA rebels gunned down Bodbod.

Ruiz said the three suspects pretended to call on Bodbod to avail of the sing-along entertainment offered by their store but when the barangay official got close, the suspects shot her dead.

"And then the suspects ran towards the mountains," added Ruiz.

He said that when Bodbod was shot, her husband was in their room and heard only four shots that he believed were merely exploding firecrackers.
