Editorial: 'Rela fare rate hike
TODAY, the City Council Public Utilities Committee is scheduled to hold a public hearing at the City Kiosk in Divisoria to decide the P1 fare rate petition being sought out by motorela units.
While the petition had long been forthcoming and is not totally unjustified, still it comes as a constant reminder to the public that things are bound to get worse economically than better for this year.
The motorela fare rate hike may for one force people to walk rather than board their vehicles or worse, may cause people to ride passenger jeepneys despite the P.50 addition.
But that's the reality both motorela drivers and the riding public must accept going in today's public hearing. And the fare rate would eventually come sooner or later.
We don't know whether today's power rate hearing would be similar to last year in which a lot of motorela operators walked out in protest of the fare rate increase because it may force them out of business.
In a way, their predicament is the same as that being faced by the taxi drivers here, who got their fare rate increase up at P30 flag down rate but reportedly complained of having fewer passengers.
Under this scenario, it may be advisable at this point is to totally cut off or regulate the number of motorela units in order to avoid congesting an already flooded market.
The advantage here being that instead of the regional Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Northern Mindanao it is within the ambit of the City Government to regulate the motorelas.
