Suspect in army's slay wants to yield

THE suspect in the murder of the commanding officer of the 10th Artillery Battalion of the Fourth Infantry Division was reportedly clobbered and humiliated in front of his wife.

Sources close to Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro made this disclosure amid reports that the suspect, identified as Sergeant Nelson Malasarte, had sent feelers to the wife of victim Lieutenant Colonel Eduardo Peralta Wednesday.

Peralta's wife works as corporal worker at the hospital inside Camp Evangelista.

In an interview, Criminal Investigation Division Group chief Senior Superintendent Julian Pantoņal said there were witnesses who saw Malasarte leaving the victim's office behind the back of the Fourth ID headquarters in Camp Evangelista, Patag this city.

"And he was carrying a gun that time," Pantoņal said.

He said Peralta scolded Malasarte prior to the incident. The official told Malasarte to buy some drugs for him because he was not feeling well.

But Malasarte relayed this order to another one who was unable to buy medicines because the pharmacy inside the camp was closed.

"According to others, Peralta is silent and a strict disciplinarian," Pantoņal said.

Sources who requested anonymity said the victim would frequently scold and beat up Malasarte.

As for this moment, Carmen police precinct chief Inspector Exudio Vidal said the case is ready for filing as soon as the family files a formal complaint against the suspects.

Peralta is a native of Guadalupe, Makati City and his remains were brought there for internment.

Two previous shooting deaths among soldiers in the Fourth Infantry Division were also caused by grudges. (Stephen Capillas with a report from Sun.Star SuperBalita)
