A tough task ahead for 'A' chessers By Lynde Salgados
* With the sponsor's brilliant introduction of handicap chess in February
EVEN without a credible chess club to stand for its cause, Cagayan de Oro chess is getting more exciting with a benevolent sponsor coming to its rescue along with some fresh ideas.
For the first time in local chess history, a tournament is set to be held here with handicapping scheme applied for Class A players to give equal chances to their less-fancied foes.
So, top local acts such as National Master Levi Mercado and Candidate Master Johnnel Balquin will give an odd or "partida" to Class B and Super B rivals in the much-awaited knockout showdown that will be played shortly after the 3rd Camp Phillips Open on Feb.9-10.
"If we'll follow the usual Swiss system pabor kaayo sa mga Class A so, butangan nato og handicap ang mga seeded bets like kaduha or katulo ba nila pildehon ang mga Class B aron patas ang laban ug ma-enjoy ang tanan," said the tournament sponsor whose utmost generosity has sparked a renaissance of sort in the local chess group that has been plagued by leadership crisis since the breakdown of the once-fabled Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Chess Club (CMOCC).
Tournament in-charge Leo Dinglasan told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that attractive cash prizes are awaiting the winners of the forthcoming Divisoria chess spectacle.
"Sigurado nga daghan ang mangapil ani kay good move kaayo ang idea ni Doc," Dinglasan said.
Meanwhile, the 3rd Camp Phillips Open that will get underway at Chito Lorenzo Pavillon in Camp Phillips, Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon is staking over P10,000 in cash prizes plus trophies.
The seven-round Swiss system event will see chess combatants playing under the time control of one hour play-to-finish.
Like in the last two editions, organizer Audie Abrea made an assurance that participants will enjoy free accommodation for their two-day stay in the breezy town of the landlocked province of Bukidnon.
Prizes at stake for the top-three winners are P4,000, P2,000 and P1,000 plus trophies. Fourth to 10th placers will be receiving P500 each.
Special prizes will also be given to top kiddy, top junior, top senior and top unrated contestants.
